In Pursuit of Hospital Quality: Creating Effective Performance Measures and Transparency in Health Care

In the Health Affairs Blog (8/4), Charles Kahn, president and CEO of the Federation of American Hospitals (FAH), commented that for hospitals to advance and sustain progress on improving performance and putting greater effort  into preventing patient harm, “efforts that have been taken by the public and private sectors need to be properly targeted and refined. … Well-honed clinical and performance measurement now and ‘big data’ analytics in time should drive quality improvement, value purchasing, and meaningful transparency.” Patients must be assured that any facility whose services they use should be considered "above average."
