Healthleaders Media (Desjardins, 8/25) reported that a recently released study “found that not-for-profit hospitals in California provide more charity care on average than for-profit hospitals, but that there's a wide variation in the amount of charity care they provide.” The study, from Health Affairs, showed that more than 30 percent of not-for-profit hospitals had less than 0.9 percent of their operating expenses accounting for charity care, whereas less than 5 percent of these hospitals dedicated more than 5 percent of operating expenses to charity care.
